Lucky If You Spot It: Chiikawa Appears on Utility Poles Around Ikebukuro

If you’re walking around Ikebukuro in Tokyo, don’t forget to look up once in a while.
Scattered across the streets of Higashi-Ikebukuro, Chiikawa character panels have quietly appeared on utility poles — not as an event or exhibition, but as part of the city itself.

There are 20 poles in total, making each encounter feel like a small stroke of luck.

What’s Happening in Ikebukuro?

These Chiikawa panels are part of a promotional campaign by Kodansha, the publisher of the original manga.
Unlike temporary posters, the panels are made from solid, metal-like materials, suggesting they are meant to stay for a while.

The designs vary from shy, blushing Chiikawa expressions to appearances by Goblin characters, adding diversity and surprise to the streetscape.

Where to Find Them

All 20 utility poles are located in Higashi-Ikebukuro, Tokyo:

  • 13 poles in Higashi-Ikebukuro 3-chome

  • 7 poles in Higashi-Ikebukuro 4-chome

The area surrounds Chiikawa Park, located near Sunshine City Annex.

Starting from Chiikawa Park and walking through nearby streets greatly increases your chances of spotting them.

Why This Feels So Japanese

Rather than creating a dedicated exhibition space, Chiikawa becomes part of everyday urban life.
No tickets, no queues — just a moment of surprise when you notice something familiar above you.

That sense of discovery is exactly what makes this street-level character culture so charming.
